SPRINGFIELD, MASS -- A two alarm fire destroyed a three-story apartment building in Springfield. When
firefighters arrived at 54-56 Cleveland Street, flames were so intense firefighters could not even enter the
building to search for victims. Several people were forced out into the cold just after 4 o'clock Tuesday
morning. It is still unclear whether anyone is inside the building at this time. One side of the building was
fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The fire then quickly spread to the entire building,
creating a dangerous situation for firefighters. According to Fire Department Spokesperson Dennis Leger it
appears the fire started in the back of the building. The roof eventually collapsed, and the building is a
total loss. Nine apartments have been destroyed, and 43 people have been displaced from their homes.
The Red Cross is helping five of the nine families who lived in the building find temporary housing.
