Little Brother In Battle, In Our Thoughts And Prayers

ABOUT FIREMAN IAN SWARR -- Ian Evan Swarr was Born may 28, 1998 At Lancaster General Hospital. he was the first patient born there with
Epidermolysis Bullosa , we call it EB for short. It is a very rare genetic skin disorder. With EB you are missing the protein that holds your layers of skin
together. There are many different types of this skin disorder Ian has the most severe. The first signs of something wrong came just minutes after Ian was
born. When the mid wife and nurses took him from me and they wiped him off, like they do all babies after birth. This time was different, they wiped Ian's
skin right off of his little legs. NICU was called right away, nurses and doctors scrambled everywhere trying to figure out what was going on. The answer
took days to really figure out. I recall a Dermatologist from Lancaster saying to me. If I where you I would pray hard that it is not Epidermolysis Bullosa. He
had been a doctor 24 years and never saw a case of this. Well the biopsy, days later did tell us in fact it was EB.
Two weeks after he was born we were transferred to Philadelphia to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center city Philly, wow was that a change for
me. It turned out to be a great place for us to be , Their dermatology unit was the best in the state and they have been doing research on this condition for
years. We found great doctors and staff there. Ian was monitored for a few weeks and a feeding tube was placed due to lack of nutrition because of the
sores in his little mouth. He came home at the end of July.
Since May of 1998 my life has changed, I see how we all take things for granted, our skin, our ability to walk and run even eat a simple potato chip. Ian has
gone through so much the past nine years... It has continued to become a real challenge for him, but a challenge that only him and his family really
understand. Ian is in a wheel chair and does not walk at all anymore. He does stand occasionally. He is very limited as to what food he can consume. He
eats very soft foods. The scar tissue has caused Ian's esophagus to be no bigger than a pencil . Ian has under gone three surgeries to open his esophagus
to make it easier to eat, and even swallow his own saliva. Ian has a nurse that is with him daily to help him live a some what normal life as a nine year old.
She goes to school with him. He is in 3rd grade at Central Manor Elem. He likes school. There are many, many things Ian is unable to do. As a nine year old
this can be very hard for him. He wishes he could run and play ball and ride bike. To fill that void he found something else. He has an interest in Firefighters
and all Emergency personal. Ian took a liking to all of this at the age of two and has been a fanatic ever since. It seems all who meet Ian take him under
there wing and make him feel like one of them. It has been wonderful. Ian thinks of himself as a firefighter. Ian has been a real inspiration to all that he
comes in contact with. Ian is now a member of six fire departments including 2 in New Jersey. He is very proud of this. We now understand the true
brotherhood of firefighters and there families. They have made our entire family feel just like one of them. We can not even begin to express our gratitude.
Ian under goes a bandage change 3-4 times a week that requires a very painful bath and new dressing being applied. this procedure can take up to 3 hours
to complete and is very painful for him physically and emotionally. He had a second floor bedroom and had to be carried up the steps. He also had to be
carried to the bathroom which was on the second floor. His room was small and we had to store all his bandages in the closet, under the bed and in the
attic. With his new rooms on the first floor he now has a large bath, treatment room with plenty of storage and a large bedroom. He can now hang clothes in
the closet instead of storing bandages. Ian can now take his wheelchair into all of these rooms and it has made his life so much better. He can now drive
his wheelchair up to his bed when he goes to bed instead of being carried. He can now wheel into the bathroom and brush his teeth or wash his hands by
himself. He can spend time in his room whenever he wants without waiting for someone to carry him and come and go as he wants. He loves his room!
Especially the murals that Peggy and TJ Broome painted. He now has room to display his fire memorabilia collection which continues to grow. We can not
even begin to express how grateful we are to everyone who helped make this happen. Thank You to everyone at Washington Boro Fire Company for all that
they have done.
